Following in the footsteps of Tia-Clair Toomey many women have raised concerns among fans. Some face skeptical looks, considered irresponsible every time they perform deadlifts or cleans. The reason: the fact that they are doing CrossFit® while pregnant.
Is it true that CrossFit®, and sport in general, is dangerous for pregnant women, in accordance with an old and well-established social convention? American and Canadian researchers have demonstrated the contrary in a study on the impact of intensive training on health during pregnancy and the post-partum period. Continuing to exercise and lift weights during pregnancy can be beneficial for both mother and child. We’re talking here about adapted CrossFit® training, of course, and there’s no question of trying to beat personal bests.
Most of the 679 women taking part in the study were CrossFit® or weightlifters. The results show that those who continued to lift at least 80% of their pre-pregnancy maximum experienced fewer complications related to pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period. Rates of high blood pressure, mood disorders, gestational diabetes and caesarean sections were “lower than national averages” measured in the population, reported Christina Prevett, the physiotherapist behind the study in the columns of Morning Chalk Up.
Other indicators also demonstrate the benefits of CrossFit® during pregnancy: participants who maintained their pre-pregnancy training levels had fewer incontinence problems during and after pregnancy. Similarly, they did not develop pelvic floor dysfunction, as can occur in some pregnant women.
The aim of this study is to show that lifting (heavy) weights during pregnancy is not dangerous and can have a real positive impact.” There are still a lot of fears about exercise during pregnancy, concludes Christina Prevett, and my aim is to focus on empowerment rather than fear… Keeping our bodies strong is something we should prioritize.”
